Lathmar Holi in Barsana
Barsana plays Holi for forty days, and for one afternoon the whole country watches a single lane. This is the guide to all of it: what the game is, which day is which, where to stand, and how to come away with colour on your clothes and nothing worse.
What Lathmar Holi is
Lathmar means beaten with a lathi. Braj tells it this way: Krishna and his friends came from Nandgaon to colour Radha and her Sakhis, and the women of Barsana drove them off with sticks. So every year the men of Nandgaon, the huriyare, come again with shields, and the women of Barsana, the huriyarin, meet them in Rangeeli Gali with lathis. The men sing and tease, the women swing, the shields take the blows. It is played, not fought, and it belongs to the two villages. Visitors watch.
The next dates
Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana is expected on Tuesday 16 March, with Laddu Holi on Monday 15 March and Nandgaon on Wednesday 17 March. Holika Dahan is on 21 March and Rangwali Holi on 22 March. Some calendars put Barsana's day on the 17th; the temple announces it in February.

Where to stand
- Rangeeli Gali is where the lathis come out. It is narrow and packed from early afternoon; a rooftop or a balcony over it is the best place, not the lane itself.
- Shriji and its steps fill with samaj singing and gulal before the procession comes down. Going up in the morning and staying is easier than climbing in the afternoon.
- Peeli Pokhar is where Nandgaon's party stops on the way in. Less crush, and you see them arrive.
- Cars stop far out. On Laddu and Lathmar Holi the town is closed to traffic hours ahead. Sleep in Barsana, or plan for a long walk in and out.
Safety, plainly
- Keep groups small and fix a meeting point and an exit before you go near the lane.
- Women and families do better on a rooftop than in the crowd. Police run anti-harassment squads, but height is safer than the lane.
- Do not step into the game. The lathis are for the huriyare with shields.
- Wear a white kurta you can lose, glasses or goggles for the gulal, and oil your skin and hair the night before. Phone in a zip pouch, cash in small notes.

Tuesday 16 March 2027 (expected), on Phalgun Shukla Navami. Laddu Holi is the day before and Nandgaon's Lathmar Holi the day after. Some calendars give the 17th; the temple confirms in February.
Why do women hit men with sticks at Barsana Holi?
